Core 1: Columbarium + Queer Community Center

It wasn’t too long ago that the response to the HIV epidemic, which has killed 40 million people since 1981, started with the systematic targeting of Queer people across the world. San Francisco became the epicenter for Gay activism in the 80’s and 90’s and so, the choice of site was fitting in continuing the Queer narrative lightly touched upon in each previous project. This was done in an effort to bring awareness in how and for whom we design space, and how bringing attention to Queer history can hopefully begin to shape a future that is more inclusive and one that actively fights against its erasure. Inspired by the AIDS crisis, its victims both past and present, and the Queer community in the Bay Area, the program needed to be conducive to the needs of the living and the dead: A Columbarium and Community Center.
